Engineers and Geoscientists BC is looking for new volunteers to join our Academic Examiners Subcommittee! 

Academic Examiners Subcommittee members have the unique opportunity to contribute to the regulation and governance of their profession by reviewing the academic records of applicants for the P.Eng. designation. This will assist in the fair and timely assessment of P.Eng. applications.

The work that our subcommittee members do in this role can be completed remotely, typically takes one to two hours, and can be scheduled around other commitments (reviews do not need to be completed in one sitting). 

Requirements: 

  • Have at least one year as a registered professional with Engineers and Geoscientists BC in the required/closely related discipline. Registrants with retired/non-practising status also qualify.  

  • Have experience in academia either currently teaching at, or retired from, a local (BC) post-secondary education institution offering accredited engineering or related programs. 

  • Have a good understanding of local engineering program curricula and requirements in the required discipline. 

  • Familiarity with CEAB accreditation requirements is preferred.

Why we need you:  

  • The profession of engineering is continuing to grow in BC and in turn, so are the number of applications we receive (we have experienced an increase of 40% in applications for P.Eng.). We need volunteer examiners to ensure the timely registration of our applicants. 

  • Each examiner is a highly valued volunteer who helps to maintain the integrity of the application process. 

What you do: 

  • Review the academic records of applicants who do not meet the requirements set out in the Bylaws and make recommendations to the Credentials Committee with respect to their academic qualification for registration. 

  • Evaluate the academic program of such applicants for compliance with the Engineers Canada Examination Syllabus (the Syllabus) in the discipline of application, and recommend to the Credentials Committee, assignment of examinations and/or courses to address non-compliance with the Syllabus. 

  • Advise the Credentials Committee on matters of academic policy, including endorsement of Syllabi. 

  • On average, an Examiner will carry out up to 10 reviews per year. The number of reviews requested of you will depend on the number of applications submitted related to your field of expertise. 

  • The Subcommittee meets approximately once per year to discuss policy updates, reviews, challenges, etc. This is typically a hybrid meeting with the option to attend in person.
